TUFTED HAIR GRASS Deschampsia caespitosa Typical appearance in winter  showing live and dead leaves. Found on the heathland area and other places in the forest,  where it forms large tufts.  The leaves are rough and sharp. 

YORKSHIRE FOG Holcus lanatus. Common throughout the forest, showing the typical pink inflorescence before flowering, and the grey-green leaves and stems.  Flowering May-July.

COCKSFOOT Dactylis glomerata is common throughout the forest.  

 Up to 1m. tall.   Inflorescence 18cm.  May-August

BARREN BROME Bromus sterilis is common along the rides. 30-100cms tall. The inflorescence is loose and floppy.   May-June

WALL BARLEY

Hordeum murinum

Common in waste places, near gates. 20-60cm. tall.

Inflorescence 10cm.

May- July.

YORKSHIRE FOG

Holcus lanatus

Tufted, hairy, soft to the touch. Common throughout the forest.

30-100cms. tall.

Inflorescence 10cm.

MEADOW FOXTAIL Alopecurus pratensis Common in Latchford meadow. 30-100cm. tall.  Inflorescence 5cm.

CRESTED DOG'S TAIL  

Cynosurus cristatus

Found in Latchford meadow and the heathland.

15-60cm. tall.

Inflorescence 6cm.

MEADOW BARLEY Hordeum secalinum

Found in Latchford meadow and other grassland areas.

30-60cm. tall.

Inflorescence 7cm.

June - July.

FALSE BROME

Brachypodium sylvaticum

Common woodland grass, along Retreat Path and Roe's Well path. Broad drooping hairy leaves. Tufted bright green plant up to 60cm.

Inflorescence 13cm.

June - July.

SWEET VERNAL GRASS

Anthoxanthum odoratum.

Early flowering in April, and found on Latchford meadow.

Up to 50cm. tall

Inflorescence 5cm.

April - May.

WAVY HAIR GRASS Deschampsia flexuosa

Common on the heathland and Latchford meadow.

25 - 45cm. tall.

Inflorescence 14cm.

June - July.

RED FESCUE

Festuca rubra

A tufted grass, very common on the heathland and throughout the forest.

Up to 50cm. tall.

Inflorescence 11cm.

May-June.

SOFT BROME GRASS Bromus hordeaceus

Common along rides and on Cabin Hill.

Up to 70cm. tall.

Inflorescence 9cm.

May-July.

PERENNIAL RYE-GRASS Lolium perenne

Common in meadows and grassland areas of the forest but frequently mown

50-80cm tall.

Inflorescence 19cm.

May-June

TWITCH or COUCH GRASS Agropyron repens Common in the meadow, waste places and grassland areas. A persistent weed and difficult to eradicate. Spreads by underground runners. Up to 1.2m tall.

Inflorescence 16cm.

FLOTE GRASS or FLOATING SWEET GRASS

Glyceria fluitans

Found in Roe's Well.

Has creeping stems, lower floating leaves. Up to 80cm tall. Inflorescence 24cm.

 TIMOTHY GRASS

Phleum pratense

Common on the grassland area. Up to 1.5m tall.

Inflorescence 12cm.

June- July

FALSE OAT GRASS Arrhenatherum elatius

 A tufted perennial grass with inflorescence up to 1.5m.  Common in Latchford meadow and in most parts of the forest.
