Shoot slightly zigzag long pointed buds, angled from twig.

Thin  twigs, rough to the touch. Small buds, dark brown.

COMMON ALDER Alnus glutinosa

Buds stalked, with a mauve bloom.

Male catkins wine red.

HAWTHORN or MAY Crataegus monogyna

Thorns along stem and at ends of branches.

Occasional berry may be retained.
